The Muskau Forest
Railway – a 600 mm narrow-gauge railway grown on historical
ground – is the only of its kind in Germany. The history of the
Forest Railway goes back to the year 1895. In the beginning horses were
used but it got a steam engine for propulsion just one year later. As
an industry railway it mostly moves wood, clay, gravel and brown coal.
From the shutdown of the cross-town link of Weißwasser in 1933
the service focussed on the transportation of goods in the outskirts.
In the year 1978 it was shut down.
Thanks to some railway enthusiasts supported by the municipality Weißwasser
and the district the service on the route Weißwasser - Kromlau
could start again in 1992. Three years later the line Weißwasser
– Bad Muskau was added. Now only passengers are serviced on both
of the routes. Thanks to the miniature train they can get to know and
enjoy the beautiful countryside of our region even better.
